This admin message is inspired by another groups moderator but the sentiment is the same. The other moderator and I have been having bad experiences and probably others are too. The site is setup to make connections between people for the sack of keeping items out of the landfill. Two behaviors are less than desirable.
The first, you may not know about, is not responding to someone who is interested in the item. Members are not required to respond to everyone but the system isn't perfect. Email or replies sent within Freecycle.org(R) and responding to a post via outside email such as Outlook or Yahoo email get lost - I've experience this phenomenon several times. Responding to an offer from within Freecycle.org(R) is the most reliable. The problem is intermittent. Members don't know if they reached you or you decided to give the item to someone else. This leads to offers being never claimed because members assume the item went to someone else. Please respond to the people who say they are interested in your item, but you've given the item to someone else.
The second is if you agree to pick up an item, please pick up the item or tell the person making the offer you have changed your mind and don't want the item any more. Notifying someone you changed your mind is very helpful and encourages people to continue using Freecycle.org(R). I want the people who are getting the item to be able to use it and get enjoyment out of the item. If the exchange is not going to work then lets find someone else, but leaving the giver hanging is not polite and diminishes the use of Freecycle.org(R).
I can't mandate these two behaviors but they will make the Freecycle.org(R) experience so much better.
Happy New Year and Best wishes,
Your Littleton Freecycle.org(R) moderator
