"Just Come Get It" Postings: Illegal or Just Bad Etiquette?
We constantly receive complaints from our Mt. View Freecycle members about posters who offer items with a pickup location in their posting, put their items out on the curb, and say "First come, First serve".
Is this behavior illegal with respect to Freecycle rules? No. Is it poor etiquette? Yes, absolutely.
Why do people complain? The reason is that someone who is interested in the item cannot tell whether the item they want is still available, and therefore could drive to the location to find that the item they want is no longer there. It is very frustrating for people who take valuable time out of their day to pick up an item, and then find it is already gone.
Most Freecycle members just delete these postings and WILL NOT ATTEMPT TO PICK UP THE ITEM, even if they want it. The poster may not get any response at all! And, to tell you the truth, this is a great way to make enemies with your Freecycle compatriots.
There is one other thing for posters to consider. Do you really want to send your address to over 4000 people, rather than to a single person who has responded to your posting and is planning to pick up the item? Probably not.
Thanks for Freecycling! Your Mt. View Moderators.
