Freecycle Etiquette

Dear Freecycle.org Member,

Thank you for being a part of The Freecycle (R) Network. This message is sent to all subscribers upon joining, and periodically to the entire list. If this message hasn't been revised since the last time you read it, then there is no need to read further, thank you. Date of last revision: April 26 2007

If you have just joined Freecycle or want a review to make the best use of our Freecycle group, please continue reading. This message contains essential knowledge for all Freecycle members and will answer MANY common new-user questions.

Freecycle matches people who have items they no longer need with people who could still use these items. The goal is to keep usable items out of the landfill. By using what we already have on this earth, we reduce consumerism, manufacture fewer goods, and lessen the impact on the earth. Another benefit of using Freecycle is that it encourages us to let go of clutter that we no longer need while helping out the local community in the process.

Begun on April 26 2007, the New Plymouth Freecycle group is a branch of an incredibly fast-growing international Freecycle movement, which began in Tucson, AZ on May 1st, 2003 and now boasts thousands of groups all over the world.

FREECYCLE RULES & ETIQUETTE In the interests of keeping the local group running smoothly and respectfully, the general guideline applies that after any two offenses the member may be removed from the local group by the local moderator.

1) KEEP IT FREE, LEGAL & APPROPRIATE FOR ALL AGES.

2) SUBJECT LINE OF YOUR POSTS. Use these phrases to make it easy for others to delete or view:

OFFERED: sofa, downtown. [Offering more than 1 thing? Still keep it in 1 e-mail, please] TAKEN: sofa WANTED: sofa, any condition. [Please use this sparingly and don't offer money. And, of course, don't ask for extravagant items such as a diamond ring.

3) PLEASE DO NOT POST THE SAME "WANTED" POSTING MORE THAN ONCE A MONTH.

4) NO POLITICS, NO SPAM, NO MONEY, NO PERSONAL ATTACKS/RUDENESS, NO PROSELYTIZING/RELIGION. Please respect the diversity of our members.

5) YOUR APPROXIMATE LOCATION: Try to note this in the subject line and in the body of your e-mail. "OFFERED: Sofa, Main St. & Fair Ave"

6) NO OFFERING PEOPLE: Posting oneself or other people is NOT allowed.

7) KEEP IT ALL IN ONE E-MAIL. Got more than one thing to give away? Keep it all in one e-mail please and just number the items for your own clarity. This reduces the overall number of e-mails we all have to receive.

8) SAFETY Be aware! It is up to each individual member of Freecycle when arranging for pickup of the item being given away to be appropriately aware of the potential risk of having "a stranger" come to your home to pick something up. Freecycle as a organization assumes no responsibility for this risk. You may want to arrange to meet in a public place or leave the item on the front porch without mentioning whether or not you will be home at the time of pickup.

9) CAN WE USE FREECYCLE TO FIND NEW HOMES FOR PETS? Yes, keep it legal & be lovingly careful. However, posts about pets for breeding purposes are not allowed in Freecycle groups.

10) NO TRADING PLEASE. All items gifted on Freecycle are with no strings attached.

11) RESPONSES GO ONLY TO OFFERER. It keeps down the sheer number of e-mails.

12) PICK UP. Arrange as you like. Generally, please wait until you get several responses or perhaps until the next day, and then choose the recipient you prefer. That's half the fun. Consider giving a charity preference if one should respond to your message. Arrange pickup with one person only, rather than saying "It's out front, whoever arrives first may claim it." Otherwise you'll become unpopular very quickly in your local group. Give your phone number to only one person at a time or ask for the recipient's phone number. Otherwise, you'll receive many phone calls.

13) A BRIEF NOTE ON FREECYCLE ETIQUETTE: "Be nice." We've got a great community here so when you arrange to pick up an item from another Freecycle member, it is basic good manners to accommodate them as much as possible in terms of scheduling and then be punctual; they are, after all, giving you something you need and asking nothing in return except that you will arrive at the location on time or notify them about a delay.

TIPS TO ORGANIZE ALL OF THE NEW E-MAILS YOU ARE GETTING:

a) CREATE A SEPARATE E-MAIL FOLDER & AUTOMATICALLY HAVE FREECYCLE STUFF GO TO IT. Create a separate folder in your Outlook Express or other mail program & have Freecycle mail sent to it automatically with a new rule under tools/message rules/mail/ Most "free" web-based mail services such as Yahoo or Gmail also provide filter tools for users.

b) OR, SET YOUR YAHOOGROUPS ACCOUNT TO "DAILY DIGEST" OR "SPECIAL NOTICES" (you may simply read the messages online). You may reset your own personal preferences on the main group webpage (under "Edit My Membership" near the center of the top of the page).

IMPORTANT: CHANGES TO YOUR ACCOUNT ARE NOT IMMEDIATE. Whenever a user changes settings, there is a delay in the time it takes for Yahoo to process the change until the change takes effect. In short, it may take several days for changes to be seen. So, please don't email the moderators with comments such as, 'I changed my settings/unsubscribed yesterday, why am I still getting emails?' Please be patient, and all should be accomplished. Don't try to make a change a second time as this may result in another day of waiting.

If you encounter further problems, you might want to consult the Yahoo! Groups help pages at: http://help.yahoo.com/help/us/groups/

For your information, you CAN delete your own messages from the message list for any reason (for example, if someone has taken the item you offered, or if you've received the item you wanted, or if you posted something by mistake). Go back to your original post and bring it into view on the screen. Under the Messages bar, find: Reply/Forward/View Source/Unwrap Lines/Delete

Click on 'Delete.' That should do it. (Note, though, that deleting a post won't prevent it from being sent to members who receive individual emails or from being included in the next digest for those with digest options.)

DISCLAIMER: FREECYCLE NETWORK MEMBERS USE THE LIST AT THEIR OWN RISK. Please take reasonable measures to protect your safety and privacy when posting to the list or participating in an exchange. By joining the list, you agree to hold neither the list owners and moderators nor anyone affiliated with Freecycle.org responsible or liable for any circumstance resulting from a Freecycle-related exchange or communication.

SAFETY. Be aware! It is the responsibility of each individual member of Freecycle when arranging for transfer of the item being given away to be appropriately aware of the potential risk of having a "stranger" come to your home to pick up your item. Freecycle assumes no responsibility for this risk.

If you, for example, are a person who lives alone, you may prefer to say that you'll leave the item on the front porch while you are not home or arrange to meet in a public place.

-----------------------------------------

That should just about do it. Have fun keeping useable items out of landfills!

Your friendly community Freecycle moderators,

Carolyn/Victoria
