An Introduction to Transition Wayland

Dear Wayland Freecyclers,

We, Freecyclers, are keeping perfectly usable things out of the landfills and redistributing them to where they are needed. In doing so we are also fundamentally changing the culture of “stuff” and of what is valuable to us. We are giving new meaning to OFFERED, WANTED, and TAKEN. Without the middle man, we enjoy many more fun conversations with our neighbors – for many of us that is an important part of Freecycle. And without the exchange of money, we demonstrate that what is valuable cannot always be captured in dollar amounts.

If this dimension of Freecycling appeals to you, then you may be interested in a new group, called Transition Wayland. Transition Initiatives around the world are looking economic instability, climate change, oil dependence, energy depletion, food insecurity, and the destruction of natural habitats square in the face and they're asking: what can we do? The answer is: lots. Transition Wayland wants to get to work by raising awareness about the issues while cutting them down to the size of our community. We want to start building Wayland’s resilience by relocalizing our economy, food, energy, and culture, thus preparing us for a low-carbon future that nourishes the community while respecting the Earth.
