Personal safety, data privacy and financial security
Winchester Freecycle(®) Moderators welcome you to our group. So that your experience of using the group is positive we ask you to read and follow the guidelines below.
You should not normally include a phone number in posts. We know that occasionally you need to give out your phone number so we do not reject posts that contain a phone number. You own the responsibility of deciding when to include a phone number in your posts.
We advise against including any unnecessary personal information in your posts. We check posts and mentioning your family circumstances can cause a delay to your post going out. Posts get seen by all members of the group, currently over 5000 people. We are a friendly group but they are not all your friends.
Payment for delivery scam
If you are asked to pay in advance for delivery you will not get the item - this is a fraud. Usually the Freecycle member being given an item collects the item, so when someone refuses to give you a collection address assume it is a scam. You should never be asked to pay for delvery before you have received an item.
Do not transfer money using UKash - you will lose your money and you will not get your item. If you have been a victim of fraud via Ukash vouchers, contact UKash immediately on 0808 234 6244 (open 24 hours) to see if the payment can be blocked.
Beware anyone insisting on payment in advance of delivery for washing machines and fridges - if you can't afford to replace broken white goods then you can't afford to hand over money before you get the item.
New electronic goods are not given away free, so be suspicious of anyone offering the latest TV or tablet. If something sounds too good to be true ... use common sense and judgement when using Freecycle.
Posting Email address
You should consider whether you want to set up an email address specially for Freecycle if your main email address gives your full name.
Be aware! It is up to each individual member of Freecycle when arranging for pickup of the item being given away to be appropriately aware of the potential risk of having "a stranger" come to your home to pick something up.
Freecycle as an organization assumes no responsibility for this risk.
