Keep it FREE, Legal & Appropriate for all ages

As a guide these are the types of things we do not allow on Freecycle

•Alcohol, Tobacco, Knives and Firearms (They all have age restrictions). •Drugs (Legal or otherwise). •Money (Not really the point of Freecycle and doesn't keep stuff out of landfill). •Animals (please instead use one of the many reputable organizations out there that do their best to rehouse animals eg. RSPCA, Blue Cross, Dogs Trust, Cat Protection). •Adverts or spam either through publishing a message to the group or replying to a message. •Houses/Flats/Land (Doesn't keep stuff out of landfill). •No passing on of these cascading emails with 'helpful' information or jokes in however well intentioned they are. If you want to forward them you should send to the people in your email address book. It is a personal decision to send it on, but not something a lot of the recipients of this email list signed up for. •Vouchers that give money off should not be offered on Freecycle because they are not something that would necessarily end up in Landfill and they are a type of advertising that promotes consumerism and spending money at a particular shop. •Tickets to events that you can no longer go to. Fails the landfill test. •People (however much your family is annoying you), Also it shouldn't be used as a dating agency.

Be also aware of the following copyright considerations:

You should not pass on original copyrighted material if you retain a copy yourself, either on CD (or similar) or digitally. Nor should you pass on copies of copyrighted material. It is acceptable to pass on used media as long as you offer them as such, e.g. CD-ROMs, CDs, video and audio tapes, etc. Offers should *not* be based on the content of the media.

•For computer software, you should check the terms of your licence agreement, but apart from "freeware", "shareware" or "open source" material, it is almost certain that you should remove all traces from your own system before passing it on. If you hold a valid licence for something but have lost or damaged the original media, please contact the manufacturer. •Blank videos with recorded TV shows on them. Legally you are allowed to record TV shows for personal use but not give them away unless you blank the tape first.

If you are the recipient of an item which you believed would be original and was being legally offered, but it turns out to be illegal in some way, please inform the moderators.

Cross posting

Please do not use the Winchester Group simultaneously with other groups to make a larger group and therefore reach a bigger audience. Freecycle has local groups primarily to avoid excessive travelling to exchange items.

Please use your local group first and if that fails then please post on the Winchester group. If Winchester is your local group use us first and then try others if that fails.

I believe the members of this group have the right to feel they are the only ones being offered this item at any one time. Back to top

Selecting the Recipient

You may get a number of replies to your OFFER and it is up to you who you decide to give it to. But I don't recommend just giving it to the first person to reply because it is possible to set up an automatic response which is sent back as soon as the offer arrives in your inbox. These can generally be spotted by the reply not actually mentioning the item. Take a moment to analyse the message; Have they said why they want it? Are they polite?

Also some members are on the `Daily digest' or `Special notices' options so don't get to see the offers as quickly. To give everyone a chance I recommend waiting for 24 hours if you can, and selecting a recipient from all the replies to date. Back to top

Short description

Just give the short description of the item. Don't use please, desparate or any other words that do not describe what you are offering or requesting.

Do not ask to SWAP items because Freecycle is about keeping things out of landfill and swapping does not meet this requirement. Back to top

Approximate location

The location should be in the Winchester area. Do not give your precise address or postcode. Back to top

Try to make your first post to the group an OFFER

In the spirit of giving, we would recommend that you make your first posting to the group an OFFER. No offer is too small.

Please do not post the same WANTED ad more than once a fortnight Back to top

Selling items you get from Freecycle

There has been some concern that people are taking items offered with the intent to sell them on. While I don't prohibit this (because it does keep things out of landfill), many people use this service primarily to help others.

Please be more upfront about your intent when you reply to an offer.

If you feel the person that takes your item has been less than open about their intentions, please let the moderators know. Back to top

Responses go only to the offerer

Please ensure you click on ‘Reply’ on your email application, NOT ‘Reply to All’. It keeps down the sheer number of emails. Back to top

Freecycle Etiquette

Be polite. We are all trying to help each other out and it doesn't pay to be rude.

When you arrange to pick up an item from another Freecycle Member, it is basic good manners to accommodate them as much as possible in terms of scheduling, and then be punctual. They are, after all, giving you something you want and asking nothing in return except that you will show up when you say you will. (Leaving someone hanging around is never a nice thing).

Please respect the offerer and keep them informed of any changes. If you no longer want the item contact the offerer so they can offer it to someone else. When not turning up is unavoidable, contact the offerer at the earliest opportunity to explain why. Back to top

Freecycle Network members use the list at their own risk. Please take reasonable measures to protect your safety and privacy when posting to the list or participating in an exchange. By joining the list, you agree to hold neither the list owners the moderators nor anyone affiliated with responsible or liable for any circumstance resulting from a Freecycle-related exchange or communication. Back to top

Be aware! It is up to each individual member of Freecycle when arranging for pickup of the item being given away, to be appropriately aware of the potential risk of having "a stranger" come to your home to pick something up. Freecycle as a list service assumes no responsibility for this risk. Some general rules

•Do not give out your telephone numbers in emails to the group, just to the person you are exchanging an item with. •Do not tell anyone when you are not going to be home even if you arrange to leave an item in a porch (because you will be out). I would suggest saying something like 'I will leave it in the porch for you to collect when you want'. Back to top
